 Interview with
All American Tyler Nauman of Pitt
 by Ron "Crossface" Frazier
 Crossface

Hello Tyler thanks for taking the time do this interview

Tyler  No problem. It's a pleasure
Crossface: Congratulations are obtaining All American status this year at the NCAAs..can you describe the feeling after becoming an All American?
Tyler  Actually it I was to tell you the truth I don't know if I could explain it. But other than that it's what I worked my entire life for and was complete enjoyment which bang tears to my eyes after a match for one of the first times ever in my life. Becoming an All American also made me feel as I had completed one of the biggest goals in my life but really the feeling, excitement, and enjoyment which it bought is unexplainable

Crossface

You have had two successful years so far at the collegiate Division I level, prior to attending Pitt what would you say were the highlights of your wrestling career?

Tyler

Well I was a four time PIAA AAA State place winner. I took 7th at 103 as a fresman, 3rd at 112 as a sophomore, 2nd at 125 as a junior, and Won the 130lb state title my senior year and also obtained the state outstanding wrestling award for class AAA... also my senior year i won the 130lb Beast of the East tournament title, complete in won and was named outstanding wrestle at the Dapper Dan, and took 2nd at 130lbs Nhsca Senior National tournament

Crossface:

I remember you competing at the Disney duals as a 8th grader and knocking down graduating seniors and knew then we had something on our hands...what words of advice could you give young wrestlers looking to continue their careers into the next level?

Tyler

I would just tell them to train as much as possible and always believe in your self. I feel some of the reason why I have done as well as I have done in both high school and college is because when I go out on the mat no matter who I'm wrestling I know I'm going to win and that my opponent has to beat me. but if they train and have the will to will, most likely they will be very successful!

Crossface: Who and What do you attribute your success to? Who are some of your biggest inspirations in wrestling?

Tyler

the biggest inspiration I have in wrestling and life is my dad. when I was younger I didn't even like wrestling but he kept me at it. the first time iI went to practice I stopped for a year because I hated the coach and how all he did was teach techqunic, im the type that needs to be active and that method that coach used wasn't for me. a year later my dad said "if I wrestle in this tounrey, will u tyler" then I did and watched him and I've never stopped.. But he was a single parent with my brother and I for many years until he met my step mom and he worked 12 hr shift then did everything he could with my brother and I. without him and all he has done for me I wouldnt be half the wrestle or person I am today!

Tyler

also my step mom has become a huge inspirtion in my life and wrestling career. my mother and I didnt have the best relationship and my dad met her and lucky she loved wrestling. now she makes almost everything and do and when I'm down and out shell send me a text or email to pick me up

Tyler

my last inspriation is my asst high school coach tony griffin (wrestled for psu) without this guy my skill set wouldnt be where it is today. he took me to every camp he did while coaching me and allowed me to improve so much and I thank him for that. he still helps with the little things

Crossface: Do you have plans on following your father's shoes and continue in the coaching field?

Tyler

yes I do plan to follow in my fathers shoes and coach after college. I would like to get onto a college staff and coach college level but if that doesnt work I would love to teach with is one of my majors and then coach a high school team

Crossface: Has westling helped you in the classroom as well?

Tyler

Yes, I feel wrestling has helped in in the classroom and pretty much all aspects of life. Without wrestling i dont know where I'd be today, i'd like to say the same as with wrestling, but I really don't know if I would be. Not going to lie i'm not the smartest person in the world but because of wrestling and self pride iI try hard to get the best grades I can. I also take my fathers work ethic, which is very hard working, and that contributes to wrestling and getting good grades

Crossface: What are your most memorable matches; one you won and one you lost?

Tyler

well I'd have to say my most memorable match to this day has to be wrestling parks in the national quarter finals, win and AA lose and have to fight back through wrestle backs, but also my state finals match against marshal peppelman (now 3 time state champ) and also beating keelen russel in the beast of the east finals and winning a beast title!

most memorable match I lost I would have to say is the national semi finals.. I feel i didnt wrestle the first period and got down 4-1 and was still able to tie it, take the lead, and then blow it but I know I should have/ could have won and I'll be back!

Crossface: Does the international circuit appeal to you now or after college?

Tyler

actually, it doesn't.. everyone is telling me I'm crazy but I can't lie I'm a folkstyle guy and don't really enjoy freestyle. Now I do it in order to better my folkstyle and get mat time but I don't see my self presuring international wrestling after college

Crossface :I have always been impressed with your speed..what is your favorite wrestling move?

Tyler

I'd have to say I like be on top the best. and my go to top move is the tilt. I can't name one because I have a bunch and I love doing them all.

Crossface:

Is there any rule you would like to see changed in folkstyle wrestling and why if so?

Tyler

I don't think there's any that I would change or maybe I just can't think of one that I would change at this time. Like I said above I love folkstyle so that might be why as well.

Crossface:

I want to take this time and thank you again Tyler for the interview with Crossface Wrestling and also encourage any kids who get a chance to attend any clinics you are doing this summer to try and attend.

Tyler

Thanks man. I'm glad you asked me to do an interview and I could answer most your questions. thanks again

Interview with Anthony Robles

Crossface:  Anthony, first of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time for this interview during this busy time of the wrestling season.

A) thank you very much for having me on your site I appreciate it.

Crossface:Congratulations on your recent Reno Tournament of champions Championship and Ooutstanding wrestler Award.

 A) thank you I was pretty happy to win my first college tournament and I hope there will be many more after.

Crossface:Extradordinary feat- I think what impressed me the most about your high school career record, was that you did not start wrestling until your freshman year and then placed at states your sophmore year. This  is almost as amazing as your 96 consecutive wins.

Crossface:What do you attribute your success to?  A) my freshman year was my first experience ever with wrestling and it wasn’t a very good one. I think I finished the year winning maybe half my matches and I actually took last place at city. That summer though I tried to get with the varsity wrestlers at my high school and wrestle with them as much as I could. They beat me up a lot but it helped me grow as a wrestler.I kept trying to find the guys who were bigger and better than I was and by the time I was a junior , I was fortunate enough to have met some college wrestlers who would train with me.

Crossface:Another feat I enjoyed learning about was "Squaw Peak" could you enlighten our audience about this monumental site and how you have tackled this ?

 A) its kind of an initiation in order to be apart of the asu wrestling team. At the start of preseason , the coaches have us climb a huge mountain. I hated it because there were so many twists and turns in order to reach the top. To be honest the hike down was harder for me than the hike up.

Crossface:With your degree in management what field do you plan on entering?

A) actually , I have decided to switch my major to computer information systems and also to have a minor in communications. I hope to eventually get a job with a company like intel or maybe IBM. Ive also been told by some people that I should consider motivational speaking as a career and I think I would enjoy doing that.

Crossface:Do you have any aspirations to coach in the future and if so at what level?

 A) Ive thought about maybe coaching at a high school level but right now Im not sure. I have two brothers wrestling in high school and hopefully one other brother who is about to start wrestling and I love teaching them some of my favorite wrestling moves so coaching could be a possibility.

Crossface:What are your most memorable matches; one you won and one you lost?

I think my most memorable would have to be the championship match at nationals. After the match I felt like I could finally relax because I reached the goal that I had for myself since the year before. The most memorable match that I lost would have to be last year at nationals when I lost to tanner gardner from Stanford in overtime because it was the last match I needed to win in order to all-american. I still think about that match.

Crossface:What advice would you give young wrestlers aspiring to reach the collegiate ranks?

I would say to just keep working hard no matter what anybody tells you. People didn’t believe that an Arizona kid with one leg could ever win high school nationals and then wrestle in college but I proved them wrong. If you have a goal for yourself don’t let anyone discourage you from reaching it no matter who it is.

Crossface:Who were some of  your role models on and off the mat?

One of my rolemodels on the mat would have to be cael sanderson. I think its awesome that even though he is one of the greatest wrestlers ever , he is still extremely humble. Off the mat would have to be my parents. We are not the wealthiest family but they have always worked hard to take care of us kids and I am forever grateful.

Crossface:With the second half of the season upon us, what is your approach heading toward the National Championships

I’m super excited. I wasn’t able to wrestle these past few weeks because I was extremely sick but in a way I think it was a good thing. I’m now coming back refreshed and excited to finish strong.. This year I plan on doing well at nationals and I’m just waiting for that chance.

We at CrossfaceWrestling.net want to thank you again for this interview and wish you the best of luck the remainder of your career on and off the mat.
