Classic XXXVI Saturday March 20, 2010
6:00 PM – WPIAL all-stars versus New York all-stars 8:00 PM – PA all-stars versus USA all-stars Fitzgerald Field House, University of Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Here is a forward of my Cuba results: It was an awesome trip with wonderful accommodations and great weather! Our hotel was right off the ocean with a sweet pool (bar inside the water), nice restaurants, & good workout facility. It was between 70 & 90 degrees outside during our entire stay and the locals were very friendly. Another highlight was the flight from Miami to Cuba was only 45 minutes so we didn't have to adjust to time changes. I hope you enjoy the update and appreciate your support. God Bless Trent Paulson
Trent Paulson won the gold medal in the 74-kg freestyle competition at the Cerro Pelado International in Havana, Cuba on Saturday. Trent defeated 2008 Olympian Ben Askren by the score of 4-0, 3-0 to avenge his loss earlier this month at the Dave Schultz Open. Paulson was dominating in the match at the Dave Schultz Open as well until Askren reversed him and caught him on his back for a fall. Trent defeated three opponents on his way to the finals. He beat Eduardo Valencia of Mexico (7-1, 4-2), pinned Edison Hurtado of Colombia (1-0, pin), and then beat Ricardo Roberto of Venezuela (3-1, 1-0) to advance to the gold medal match. Travis Paulson also wrestled well in the 84-kg weight class. Travis took a bronze medal, losing in the semi-finals to fellow American Jake Herbert (0-2, 1-0, 0-1). Travis started his day with a win over Jaime Espinol of Puerto Rico (2-0, 2-1). Next he defeated Eric Leudke formerly of the University of Iowa (3-0, 2-0). He fell to Herbert in the semi-finals and then won his bronze medal match with Kevin Mejia of Honduras by a score of 4-0, 6-0. Herbert lost in the championship match to Reineris Salas of Cuba (3-1, 8-0). Raymond Jordan of the USA won the other bronze medal at 84-kg. h Nate Gallick also competed at 60-kg. Nate lost in his first round match to Fernando Iglesias of Argentina (0-1, 2-4) and was eliminated from the tournament. The USA had 16 athletes entered in the freestyle competition and won 13 medals. J.D. Bergman (96-kg) and Steve Mocco (120-kg) also won gold medals for the USA. Schedule Announced for U.S. Open Wrestling and FILA Junior Nationals The U.S. Open Wrestling Championships are the annual national championships for Senior-level athletes in the three Olympic styles of wrestling: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. The nation’s best international wrestlers will be showcased. USA Wrestling is once again calling the event by the name it has been commonly referred to for decades, the U.S. Open. The Senior competition format has been changed, with all three styles competing over two days, Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24. On Friday, the men’s freestyle Qualification Tournament will be held, along with the preliminaries in the U.S. Open in women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. On Saturday morning, the U.S. Open for men’s freestyle will begin. All three styles at the U.S. Open will be completed on Saturday. The format has been changed so that all of the gold-medal championship matches in all three styles will be held in one session, at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. The Men’s FILA Junior National Championships feature the nation’s top 17-20 year-old wrestlers competing in Greco-Roman and freestyle. The FILA Junior Greco-Roman Championships will be held on Thursday, April 22. The FILA Junior Freestyle Championships will be held on Sunday, April 25. The top seven athletes in each weight class at the U.S. Open Wrestling Championships qualify to compete at the 2010 U.S. Senior World Team Trials in Council Bluffs, Iowa, June 10-12. The Men’s FILA Junior National Championships is a qualifying event for the FILA Junior World Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., May 21-22. The Cleveland Local Organizing Committee will include the following organizations: • USA Wrestling – Ohio • Greater Cleveland Wrestling Coaches & Officials Association • Cleveland State University • Mid-American Conference • City of Cleveland • Greater Cleveland Sports Commission • Convention & Visitors Bureau of Greater Cleveland Coaches of all levels need to look into the benefits of weight management.
Buffalo Wrestlers raise over $30,000 at Takedown Cancer The University at Buffalo wrestlers opened their Mid-American Conference schedule, falling to Ohio University, 22-17, at Alumni Arena. The Bulls and the UB Division of Athletics raised more than $30,000 at "Takedown Cancer" to benefit former co-captain and 2008 graduate Jeff Parker, Carly's Club of Buffalo and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. "Our original goal was to raise $10,000 but we managed to triple that number. I cannot describe my feelings of what this means to Jeff ..." said UB coach Jim Beichner. John Martin Cannon (165 pounds), Jimmy Hamel (197), Dan Bishop (125), Kevin Smith (133) and Desi Green (149) were individual winners for UB. Cannon, Hamel and Smith won by decisions while Bishop took a major decision and Green scored a technical fall.
